One Nightstand: Part Two

We have a problem. A reading problem. No, no, no, neither of us is dyslexic – we just both like to read lots of books at the same time.  Hence, nightstands buried in a variety of delightful tomes.  Hopefully our piles will never fall over and crush us in our sleep.  If you don’t hear from us for a while…someone call our landlord.

Back in March we shared the books we were reading, but now it’s June, yo. New season. New books.

These books look good enough to eat.

My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless (33 1/3) (McGonigal)

  • Recently Jess was in her new favorite store (Transistor), and found this Mike McGonigal book about one of her favorite albums (My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless). So – she bought it. 33 1/3 has a whole series of tiny books about famous albums. If you’re a music lover, check ‘em out!

Vacation = relaxing + reading + internetting

The Witch and Other Stories (Chekov)

  • Julie loves reading short stories while on vacation, and she grabbed this one for the Cinekink Vegas trip. She barely cracked it because they were so busy at the festival, but now she’s slowly making her way through it. “The Witch” made her giggle.

Marriage: The perfect way to spice up your relationship?

Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence (Perel)

  • Watching all of the sexy movies at Cinekink brought up a topic that Julie & Jess often like to explore: how do people in long-term relationships keep the sexy spark alive? This book by Elizabeth Perel explores just that. Highly recommended.

Are You There, God? It’s Me. Kevin. – A Memoir (Keck)

  • Since we’re adapting this naughty memoir by Julie’s faux-cousin Kevin into a naughty screenplay, it only makes sense that we read and re-read it, right?  Julie read it again this week.  She laughed. She cried. She finished the treatment. Get ready…

Two scoops of bossy - J&J on LIBIDOLAND set

The Pillow Boy Of The Lady Onogoro (Fell) & Tales of Muraski and Other Poems (Bellen)

  • These two are assignments from Jessica to Julie regarding their next short. Stay tuned.

Tart Show

What Einstein Told His Cook 2: The Sequel: Further Adventures in Kitchen Science (Wolke)

  • Julie loves cooking almost as much as she loves reading, and when this book miraculously dropped into her life (thank you, book fairy!), she jumped right in.  This book combines food and science, explaining things like the difference between green tea and black tea (did you know they come form the same plant!) and when to add cream to your coffee to keep your java the hottest (answer: right after you pour the coffee. That one’s free, friends).

Hitchcock / Truffaut (Truffaut)

  • Since Julie just read that tasty Hitchcock biography, this seemed like a logical follow-up.  She just can’t get enough of that old dog…  Her mom, who also sent her the first Hitchcock biography, just sent her a collection of Hitchcock movies & tv shows – the same compilation shown in Phil Holbrook’s “One Nightstand” picture.  Coincidence? Let’s hope so.

So now we’ve shown you ours – time to show us yours!

Sheri Candler, indie marketing guru shared first:

“wanna know what I am reading? http://twitpic.com/1vn0qi

    Thank you, Sheri!

  2. Andy J says:

    My nightstand pile:
    The Pickwick Papers, Charles Dickens
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Stieg Larsson
Threshold: The Crisis of Western Culture, Thom Hartmann
    The Book Thief, Markus Zusak
    The Lacuna, Barbara Kingsolver
Dead as a Doornail, Charlene Harris (my guilty pleasure Sookie Stackhouse summer read)

  3. Jessica & Julie says:

Love your list, Andy. Please finish all of those immediately so I can borrow them next week. Thank you, and good night!

  4. I know, personally, that if I wanted sex advice, I would seek out someone named Esther. Mable would work, too…

  5. Jessica & Julie says:

    Mabel sounds hot.

  6. Jessica & Julie says:

Love it, Tyler. Thank you for sharing your pseudo-boudoir pic.

  7. I would take a pic, but you’d need about 4 as I don’t keep my reading material neatly piled on my nightstand – they’re kind of thrown higgledy-piggledy around the apartment.

However, I’m currently working my way through:

THE MAN WHO CYCLED THE WORLD – Mark Beaumont
FOUR-HOUR WORK WEEK – Tim Ferris
STORY – Robert McKee (although technically that’s more of a reference book now)
THE GUERILLA FILM MAKER’S POCKETBOOK – Jones, Zinnes & Joliffe (ditto)
THE WRITER’S TALE: THE FINAL CHAPTER: Russell T Davies & Benjamin Cook

And I’ll probably start something fiction-y soon, too. Maybe.

  8. Damn, ladies … I wish I could read.

  9. Jessica & Julie says:

Thanks, Oli. Great list. We’ll be doing this again, so maybe someday we can get a pic from across the pond.

And Nathan – we believe in you.

  10. Jessica & Julie says:

From Lisa Vandever, director and co-founder of Cinekink Film Festival: “Wanna see the books I’m not reading? http://tweetphoto.com/26694085

Yes, Lisa. We do. Smart alec.

  11. Laura M. says:

Andy–I’m doing the Sookie Stackhouse books as a guilty pleasure summer read also. :)

    My current pile:

    - Mean Little Deaf Queer, Terry Galloway (how can you resist a title like that?)

    - Deprived of Unhappiness, Sam Pickering (local essayist, who I always feel like reading in the summer)

    - The Sandman comic book series, Neil Gaiman (right now, The Doll’s House and Dream Country)

    - My Year of Meats, Ruth Ozeki (recommended by an online friend)

    - The Lightning Thief, Rick Riordan (in solidarity with my stepdaughter)

    - Living Dead in Dallas, Charlaine Harris

and, as soon as it arrives in the mail (maybe today!)

    - I Left My Arse in San Francisco, Keith Knight (I love his comics)

  12. Jessica & Julie says:

Laura, LOVE your picks! How have I not heard of this Terry Galloway before? Also very interested in Sam Pickering. Essays are the new black.
